SF
Fashion Week Designers Refine the Look Designers Borja, Kelly B, Noyes Find the SF Groove
San Francisco Fashion Week showed its third edition
at a new, sexy venue, The Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center
located in the city's swanky design district. The clothes were fabulous
with a distinctly San Francisco look and feel. Designer Cari Borja
says the "clothes are all about the movement." She showed lots of
flounces, cascading ruffles, and halter silhouettes with Victorian
construction. You might recognize Borja's signature style from your
travels as the designer was featured on the cover of where magazine
for San Francisco.

Colleen Quen's consistently beautiful creations were accompanied by
an equally luxurious media kit constructed from textured paper, containing
postcard editorial photography by Leon Saperstein. Colleen Quen 2007
"Compassion" collection mixes French couture with modern pop art;
influences of 1950s Pierre Cardin are apparent. The collection features
two-piece evening suits, mini dresses and evening gowns in a palette
of reds, fuschias and oranges. Quen's clients include Tyra Banks,
Paris Hilton, Bai Ling, and Julia dePardi.
Menswear designer Gypsy and Loic showed their eco-friendly 2007 collection
of pants, jackets, and tshirts for the 21st Century male. Simple colors
quieted the deceptively creative styles which included angled collar
neck shirts. Donna Lou from designer Amanda Lefebre showed the Spring
2007 Collection at SFFW, called "Pleasantville,” with black and whites,
neutrals, and aqua and pink throughout. Fabrics were crisp cottons
with prints. The line evokes the hip energy of the Go Gos with the
modern stage presence of the Donnas, all fitted exquisitely for the
real lady’s shape. Garments have an Izod look focused on the geometric
lines and accents. A Donna Lou girl cannot be ignored at the Sunday
country club party.
Katherine Noyes continued her unique interpretation of simple vintage
chic with a Spring 2007 collection based on seersucker, voiles, and
Swiss-dots, evoking a French country look that spoke volumes about
the progress of San Francisco fashion options. Reminiscent of the
Milan shows, Noyes' flirty numbers used details such as ruching and
layers of silk to create outfits perfect for summer metro travels
involving daytime sightseeing and early evening cocktails. Contemporary
fashion designer Kelly Barry for Kelly B presented a smart Spring
2007 collection of organic cotton and linen woven blend separates
and daydresses. Her silky soft bamboo jersey appears in kimono tops
and loose-fitting cami shirts with braided straps. Showing her range,
Barry also presents a cropped coat with elongated sleeves and quilted
jersey collar for the Spanish trend.
The sweetest offering of the week was Tamiece's stylish petite line dubbed “Liyette”
of sophisticated silk and stretch satin coordinates. The designer duo of Sheena
and Pamela Borja drew their inspiration from Bossa Nova music with a color palette
of emerald and amber. The first thing one notices about the Tamiece pieces is
the natural draping and accurate fit of the garments, and the models were patient
and sultry in their presentation.

Francisco Fashion Week Review
Strong
Spring 2005 Show Puts SF on the Fashion Map
San Francisco/ September 2004/ Metrofashion -
Colleen Quen headlined an eclectic mix of designers
for the first official San Francisco Fashion Week
produced by Mystery Girl Productions at the Palace
of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco from August
26-29, including exquisite evening and opera ball
gowns, couture bridal pieces, sophisticated city
daywear and contemporary rock-inspired denims,
lingerie and swimwear, and diverse student creations
from Art Institute of California and Fashion Institute
of Design and Merchandising.
Three days of rousing fashion shows accompanied
by a strong open retail area left a startling
impression that the aspiring San Francisco fashion
scene has arrived. As one assignment photographer
noted, ".. oh yeah, that's next year!"

celebrates after her Spring 2005 Show
To kick-off the gala season, Quen, Christina Hurvis,
and Lily Samii showed an array of evening gown
looks ranging from feather-light cocktail creations
to patterned duchess ball dresses to sequined
and corsetted dance looks. Colleen Quen San Francisco
Spring 2005 Dress Collection sported a palette
of fuschia, yellow, orange, and spring green chiffon
dresses culminating in a duchess gown with floral
abstracts from the entire palette. Quen wowed
the audience with a dramatic white mermaid sheath
gala dress with layered shoulder jacket wrapped
around a tall ebony model.
Quen herself was ecstatic at the success of the
show, with buyers all along the front row getting
an up-close presentation. One attendee remarked
on the second day, "I've already bought a
few of Colleen's dresses from this show."

Christina Hurvis San Francisco Spring 2005 Dress
Collection showed radiant satin evening dresses
in with colored waist bands for a sexy party look.
One deep v-neck design combined a chocolate top
with red waist band and gun metail satin a-line
bottom, accentuated with a ringlet necklace for
a distinctly Parisian flair. Hurvis used the same
design with a white skirt to transition to her
Bridal Couture Collection. Wedding styles were
simple feminine silhouettes with becoming details
such as waist bouquet.
Lilly Samii presented her signature Spring 2005
Couture Ball Gown Collection featuring rich colors,
beaded bodices, and layered flapper looks. UPN
Top Model Shandi Sullivan appeared in a
gray tiered chiffon flounce party dress with spiked
updo hairstyle that brought applause from the
crowd. Samii's creations displayed flamenco energy
with intricate embroidered silk throughout. One
charming paneled black and grey v-neck design
with gathered belt fabric transcended age groups.

Christina
Hurvis Channels Greece in San Francisco
Classic Couture Designer Shows Dramatic
Evening Collection
San Francisco/August 29, 2004/Metrofashion - Christina
Kurvis, known for classically inspired Parisian couture,
gave a nod to Athens during her inaugural San Francisco
Fashion Week Spring 2005 Collection; amongst
the flowing silk chiffon gowns of ivory and white there
appeared a one shoulder silhouette fit for the goddess
Athena herself.
Christina Hurvis San Francisco Spring 2005 Collection
included evening dresses in chocolate and lace, with
accent ribbons in scarlet. For 2004/2005 bridal, Hurvis
mixed empire-waist gowns with paneled silk crepe looks
and duchess ball gowns to present a spectacular San
Francisco Fashion Week couture show.
Albania-born designer Besnik showed his creative San
Francisco Fashion Week Spring 2005 Collection
including appliqued denims, shredded dance skirts and
minidresses, and a stunning strapless sparkle look.
Definitely new age, the Besnik collection mixed rich
fabrics with punkish styling for a modern interpretation
of midtown chic.

Colleen
Quen Kicks Off San Francisco Fashion Week
Cool chic daywear and festive eveningwear
arouse the San Francisco crowd
San Francisco/August 28, 2004/Metrofashion - Colleen
Quen started off San Francisco Fashion Week with the
appropriate color, gray. Home to fashion giants Gap,
Banana Republic, and Levis, and known for cool chic,
San Francisco has a unique style sense brought to life
by Colleen Quen Spring 2005 Collection.
One could visualize Quen's moony dolls strolling down
to the Financial District from their Embarcadero train
ride on a foggy summer (yes, summer) morning. Especially
tempting were Quen's tailored knee length trenchcoats
mixed with flirty high collars, just right for the quiet
romance of San Francisco.
Quickly though, the scene changed to signature Colleen
Quen ball gowns, which brought rousing appreciation
from the crowd of fashion seekers turning out for this
historic first show. Inspired by 1950's garden party
themes, these dresses make opera atendance a festive
affair. One essentially dramatic ivory gown mixed mermaid
whimsy with collared coiffure. With a brilliant kick-off
to San Francisco's first official Fashion Week,
Quen seduced buyers, writers, gossip mavens, and aspiring
style consumers alike.

Christine
Hurvis Celebrated couture wedding and evening dress
designer Christina Hurvis recently relocated to the
Bay Area after years spent studying and working in Paris
and New York. After attending the prestigious Parsons
School of Design, she worked with Christian Dior, Jean
Paul Gaultier and Pierre Balmain—as well as with celebrities
including Madonna, Shalom Harlow and Elle McPherson—before
relocating to San Francisco in 2002. As an experienced
couture designer and stylist who has worked with the
top designers in the industry, Christina brings a sophisticated,
international flair to the fashion landscape of the
Bay Area. “I like to combine a tailored look with feminine
touches, like a stretch pinstripe gown with a silk flowered
underlay,” says Christina. Her inspiration comes from
the classic couture of Balenciaga, Dior and Yves Saint
Laurent, as well as from her travels to Asia, Eastern
Europe and Africa. Couture gown creation averages four
to six months, with approximately six fittings scheduled.
Christina Hurvis Couture 2004/2005 Collection
combines bridal elegance and evening charm. Silk chiffon
pieces abound throughout the group. Colors include black,
chocolate, gunmetal, ivory, scarlet, and plum. Soft
and sensual while vibrant, Christina Hurvis 2004/2005
is a modern interpretation of classic elegance.

The
Fashion Department at the Art Institute values
quality of construction and creativity, aptly
displayed in this year's tour de force fashion
show. Melanie McCann and Chia-Yin Wu presented
sportswear and career wear in traditional cuts.
Silk charmeuse T-shirts with silk-screened imagery
were fetching paired with knee high skirts. Tamara
Madison's menswear snowboarding collection hints
at an excellent future in outerwear.
80's punk and new wave were inspirations for Erica
Hoag's collection. Her models roughed up the runway
to the sounds of The Cure, clad in tube miniskirts
in hot pink and black. Megan Hinsdale's creations
in beige and lavender flowed and fluttered with
grace. Cybelle Jacobs' swimwear was ravishing
